World Drifts In

Today, we want to raise our faithful reader's* attention to the new release from Arizona's Calexico. For those unfamiliar with 2003's exquisite "Feast of Wire," a stop over at eMusic may be in order.
The last few years have seen several EP's, live releases, collaborations and solo joints, from the team outta Tuscon- and now their back with a proper studio LP, Garden Ruin.
From the sound of the album (and the photos above) it seems as if the band has gone pop. The music sounds more rock than jazz, more city less country. On deeper dives however, the textures, rhythms, intrumental flourishes and flashes of funkiness that made Calexico sound so good on previous efforts are still there.
On Garden Ruin, they've folded a top sheet of words over their comfy musical beds and beneath a crystallized lyrical vision lies another feast of wires.
*gramatically this would be incorrect if there was more than one reader.
