Powers to the People

easily one of the most enjoyable artists around, espo uses humor, warm colors and iconic objects accompanied by bold type in consistently clever executions. he posesses a healthy disrespect for artistic boundaries across a vaiety of media, but consistently utilizes advertising as a artistic device. its this negotiation between commercial persuasion and art that ultimately powers the espo experience.
this weekend i saw his work on the 'Superfeen' truck outside the flea market on Wooster and at aLife where they are selling his recent tshirt collabrartion with irak (# 1 in the hood, g). 'the art of getting over' is a top 10 graffiti book, and his new book out with random house builds on the ouch project work he did for tylenol.
powers put 'street art' back in the gallery with reas and twist in 2000's incredible street market exhibit at deitch. his civic project, the dreamlands artists club produced some public work that is truly memorable...and March's deitch project bakery at the 2005 armory show was tasty. really. the brass knuckle cookie I bought didnt taste half bad.
